When the Plains Hotel, located in Cheyenne, Wyoming, began its transformation into the great hotel it once was, the owner, after consulting with a historical architect, called on New West to design western furniture in the Molesworth style of the 1940's.

The project was extensive, calling for expertise in refurbishing the exterior of the hotel, as well as in restoring and recreating the furnishings in the hotel's interior. New West and its newly formed contract division, Cheyenne Design, developed a strategy to help the owners accomplish their goals and push this part of the project back on budget.

Because the hotel is located in the Historic District, all changes had to conform to high standards. The exterior architectural column facades and door signage presented a formidable challenge of recreating the original look of old-world western furniture, but on a modern-day budget.

"We were able to meet the historical preservation standards at a significant savings by using state-of-the-art techniques developed by New West's strategic partnership team," New West explains.

"For the door signage, we used new applied metals technology," "Drop-ins allowed us a great deal of versatility in creating each sign, while maintaining a uniform design template."

The historic preservation standards also required historical elements in the interior furnishings. The lobby had western furniture such as Thomas Molesworth chairs and couches that needed restoration.

"After restoring the Molesworths to their original beauty, we set out to build more furnishings for the lobby and other public areas fitting the vision of the Molesworth era interior that the designers and owners desired," explained New West. "The Coffee Shop will be completed soon in the same style."

"By using the same type of leathers and chimayo weavings of the period, we recaptured the style and grandeur of the hotel interior in the 1940's". "The recreated architectural elements evoke the original look of the hotel's exterior, and the effect is that of walking through a doorway into the Western-style hospitality of an earlier time."
